The Mystery of Jewish Resilience
Topic:
General/Other

Key Findings:
This article explores the concept of resilience as it pertains to Jewish identity, and unpacks how Jewish existence has persisted in the face of a long history of hardship and persecution.
The author defines the term “resilience” as requiring two opposite traits – tenacity and flexibility. Moreover, the ability to adapt to other cultures whilst still holding onto Jewish identity is a “resilient” trait that Jews have exhibited throughout history.
Jewish resilience is perhaps beyond reason, and instead rooted in an instinct to preserve Jewish identity which is continuously passed down from generation to generation.
Methodology:
Both secular and spiritual explorations of Jewish resilience from figures such as Spinoza, David N. Myers, and Solomon ibn Verga are referenced.
