Key Findings:

The essay discusses the integral role of global Jewish philanthropy in the establishment and ongoing support of the State of Israel since the inception of the modern Zionist movement. Philanthropic efforts, classically symbolized by the Jewish National Fund’s charity boxes, have fostered deep connections between Diaspora communities and Israeli towns. Despite Israel’s recent economic advancements leading some to question the necessity of continued support, the author contends that Israel's security is fundamentally linked to the well-being of global Jewry.

Hamas’s massacre on October 7, the ensuing Israel-Hamas war and related geopolitical developments remind of Israel's vulnerability and the critical need for collaboration between Israel and the Diaspora. The essay advocates for a reimagined model of philanthropic partnership, emphasizing that Israel requires not just financial contributions but also collaborative investments and shared responsibilities from Diaspora Jews.

This partnership should encompass a multilayered approach, and should draw on diverse resources and expertise to address both immediate challenges and systemic issues, such as agricultural labor shortages. This collaborative model not only benefits Israel, but also enhances the global Jewish community's connection to Israel because it encourages active participation in its narrative and future. Ultimately, the intertwined destinies of Israel and the Diaspora necessitate a renewed commitment to mutual support and partnership in confronting shared challenges.
