Key Findings:

The essay explores the foundational principles of Judaism which encompass nationhood and national territory. It maintains that Jewish anti-Zionism is an anachronism. Central to Judaism is the concept of Jewish particularism, the unique attachment to the Jewish people, which is integral rather than incidental, and forms the basis of Jewish identity.

The essay emphasizes the interplay between particularism and universalism, noting that while the Jewish people are distinct, their purpose also involves representing universal moral values. Loyalty to the Jewish people is fundamental, and that the concept of repairing the world (tikkun olam) is inseparable from Jewish peoplehood. Notions that Jews are solely a religious community or that tikkun olam can be separated from Jewish peoplehood are rejected.

Zionism did not create a new philosophy — rather, it restored the essence of Jewish identity. Zionism sought to fulfill the three principles: the centrality of the Jewish people, territorial sovereignty, and a universal purpose. Zionism overcame its initial opposition and gained prominence in the face of rising antisemitism in Europe, because the idea that the return to Zion was not only about saving lives but also about liberating the Jewish spirit and creativity.

This essay distinguishes between opposition to specific policies and opposing the existence of the Jewish state. It acknowledges the growth of Jewish anti-Zionism among certain groups but argues that it is a minority perspective and a luxury of secure Jews. The essay concludes by emphasizing that Zionism's revival of the Jewish nation has revitalized Judaism itself, making the State of Israel an integral part of contemporary Judaism and solidifying the bond between the Jewish people and their promised land.
