Key Findings:

This essay explores the origins and connotations of “Hatikvah” throughout history, as well as its composition, melody and lyrics.

“Hatikvah” is an anthem that was well known in the diaspora for its Zionist themes.

When the Jewish state was established, many Israelis accepted it as the natural choice for the country’s anthem. However, the song was not legally adopted as Israel’s official national anthem until 2014.

There are criticisms from both the left and right wing about “Hatikvah” as the choice for the national anthem. Left-leaning critics find it controversial, as it fails to include parts of Israel’s population that are not Jewish because it is quite an explicitly Jewish song – one of the lyrics translates to “a Jewish soul”. On the Right, religious critics find it not faith-based enough, as there is no mention of God or s higher power in the song.

In addition to its lyrics, the melody of Hatikvah has been a subject of debate and research because its origins are relatively unclear. It is even difficult to ascertain if the melody is an entirely original one, as it seems to be composed from several different sources – some Jewish and some secular.

“Hatikvah” is distinguishable from other national anthems because its melodic composition projects a journey from despair to hope – an allegory for the Jewish experience.

Methodology:
