Key Findings:

Israel's current international isolation is a serious threat to its national security, economy, and global standing. This isolation, driven by a global campaign portraying Israel as oppressive and undemocratic, has severely harmed its political, economic, and cultural relations, especially among younger generations and academic circles. The loss of legitimacy affects Israel's ability to conduct military operations and could erode its democratic values.

This publication analyzes the ongoing campaign against Israel, its implications for the country’s growing international isolation, and underscores the critical consequences of this trend. Additionally, it proposes a set of policy recommendations aimed at reversing these developments.

Initially, Israel received broad international support for its self-defense in response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. However, as the conflict worsened and significant destruction and humanitarian crises began to arise in Gaza, support shifted towards harsh criticism of Israel.

Efforts by anti-Israel activists, who have successfully integrated into influential Western institutions and media, have played a crucial role in this shift. They have promoted narratives that depict Israel as the main aggressor while downplaying Hamas’s role. Social media has amplified these views, creating a strong anti-Israel sentiment globally.

Criticism of Israel has become more intense, multifaceted and focused on historical grievances and current military conduct. Accusations include war crimes, genocide, and humanitarian abuses, often magnified by biased reports and investigations from international bodies like the UN and various human rights organizations. This narrative has led to legal actions against Israel in international courts and has influenced public opinion and diplomatic relations.

The campaign has led to significant diplomatic and economic repercussions. Countries have severed ties or imposed sanctions, and there has been a rise in boycotts against Israeli businesses and academic institutions. This growing isolation affects not only Israel's international standing but also its economy and its citizens.

Moreover, the current anti-Israel rhetoric is so pervasive and entrenched, that counteracting it is particularly challenging. The depth and scope of the campaign suggest that its impacts could be long-lasting. Addressing this complex situation requires Israel to carefully manage its international actions, improve its public relations, and address humanitarian concerns to mitigate the damage and restore its global image.

The researchers warn that continued disconnection from the Western world would exacerbate these challenges, potentially leading to Israel’s further isolation and weakening its position both politically and militarily. However, the situation is not beyond repair. By recruiting opinion leaders, engaging in responsible communication strategies, and combining military and political tactics, Israel can work to restore its image and legitimacy in the international community.

Methodology:

Several decisions, reports, and opinions of international organizations and bodies, primarily the UN and its institutions (namely the General Assembly, the Security Council, and the Human Rights Council) as well as other agencies, committees of inquiry, and human rights organizations are analyzed.
