Israel and the Empathy Deficit

This essay reflects on the challenges of discussing differing viewpoints regarding Israel.


The author recalls his early visits to Israel and how Jewish life used to be largely united in its support for the country. He believes that during his leadership of Hazon, which spanned over two decades, the discourse surrounding Israel drastically shifted. This unity has eroded over time, leading to an inability to engage in productive conversations about Israel.


While it is essential to recognize diverse opinions on Israel, the ability to engage in respectful arguments has diminished, especially in recent years. This change is attributed to the polarization of perspectives in the West, which has made it difficult to have balanced discussions. Attitudes toward Israel have also become polarized, and have shifted from an uncritical pro-Israel stance to a highly critical one. This is worrying trend given that engaging with different viewpoints is absolutely crucial for promoting understanding and respectful conversation.


The author highlights the importance of empathy in discussing Israel-related issues. He points out that young Jewish progressives often emphasize universal values and social justice, and they strive to ally with marginalized groups, including Palestinians. However, he notes that this empathetic approach sometimes overlooks the genuine security concerns that Israelis face.


The author proposes three suggestions for fostering better dialogue and understanding:


Create Programs for Engagement: Programs that connect young American Jews (especially those with progressive viewpoints) with Israeli changemakers should be developed. This exposure would allow participants to engage in meaningful conversations, understand diverse perspectives, and contribute to strengthening Israeli-Diaspora relationships.


Revamp Jewish Education: New approaches to addressing both particularist and universalist concerns within Jewish education should be integrated. These should help individuals distinguish between preference and prejudice, addressing the perception that supporting Israelis equates to prejudice against Palestinians.


Relearn the Art of Argument: The importance of relearning the skill of peaceful disagreement is emphasized. The project, "For the Sake of Argument," is given as an example for teaching people how to argue respectfully, which can contribute to healthier discussions about complex issues.


By fostering empathy, engaging in constructive dialogue, and relearning the art of respectful disagreement, a healthier and more sustainable world can be created for all.

Methodology:

The author recalls his experiences founding and leading Hazon, a prominent environmental organization within the American Jewish community. Hazon's Israel trips and the organization's efforts to address the Israel-Diaspora relationship (as well as external research) inform much of this essay.
