Key Findings:

This essay critiques the mainstream antiracism approach and advocates for the return of cultural pluralism as an alternative.

Personal experiences encountering Islamophobia in America initially prompted the author to view antiracism as a viable way forward in combating racism. However, antiracism’s overuse and its emphasis on us vs. them thinking, cancel culture, and oppressor vs. oppressed narratives proved to foster division and self victimization. The author notes that this is particularly evident on college campuses today.

The antiracist paradigm that prevails in our culture is inspired by and rooted in postmodernism, post colonialism, and critical race theory. Patel argues for the return of an older paradigm– cultural pluralism. He draws inspiration from two thinkers, Horace Kallen, a Jewish scholar, and Alain Locke, a black scholar, who were friends and shared similar influences, such as William James, that informed their respective works and contributions.

Kallen fought against two cultural paradigms of his time– Kultur Klux Klanism, which states that diversity is a threat to national unity, and the melting pot paradigm which encourages assimilation. Instead, Kallan believed in striving for a society that resembles an orchestra, where diversity is essential and unity is achieved without uniformity.

Locke emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating the distinct cultural identities of Black Americans and appreciating their contributions. His work and vision promoted the concept that diverse expressions in American culture lead to a broader and more successful society.

The author contends that effectively addressing issues of race and prejudice in America requires individuals to preserve their distinct identities while working together to benefit the whole. He highlights American Jews as a strong example of this principle, noting that despite a rise in antisemitism, their contributions to society are still appreciated and recognized by many. In order for this paradigm shift to become effective, cooperation is key.
